Tennis Trading

Hi folks,

Well it has been a good Saturday afternoon trading the tennis. I traded on two matches.

Kohlschreiber Vs Monfils
Roddick Vs Murray

I thought today I would discuss my tactics, as for the first game it illustrates that when you get it wrong you can still make a profit.

Kohlschreiber Vs Monfils

Before this game, as usual, I looked at both players last 6 tournaments, and their stats on the ATP website. Both players had been playing well, however, Monfils had the edge and the odds reflected this at 1.48. I decided to back Monfils from the start for 5% of bank, and depending on how the game progressed I was going to back both players on serve as well, if they were holding and serving comfortably.

Well the first game Monfils got broken. However, I still was of the opinion that he would win and get back into the game, so I backed him again at higher odds with a 5% stake. After a couple of games it became apparent that he was not playing well, he was off the pace and was holding serve, but not very comfortably. Kohlschreiber, on the other hand was playing well and holding serve well, so I started to back him on serve, to reduce the red on him. As the set progressed it was obvious that Monfils was not on form and was having a bad day. So when Kohlschreiber won the first set, I hedged out on both players for about a £1 loss. I then laid Monfils at the start of the second set. Kohlschreiber carried on his good form, broke early and I hedged out for a small profit of £1.20.

Roddick Vs Murray

Murray was the favourite in this match at 1.6, and looking at the stats, I could not see roddick winning, unless Murray played poorly, or his ankle was giving him problems. Yes Roddick has started to find a bit of form at Queen's, but he has not had a great season, although to be fair to him, the last few tournaments have been on clay, which is not his favourite service. So I backed Murray from the start for 5% of bank and again, if both players served well, I would look to back on serve. Well I did not have to, as Murray broke early and took the first set comfortably. I hedged out at the end of the first set for a profit of £1.16

So overall a profit of £2.36 which is ~3.5% of bank.

The key is to stay calm and don't panic if a trade goes against you early, there is plenty of time to get back into it.

Happy Trading
