World Cup So Far

Well the group stages are now complete and this is were the real teams get down to business.

There were a few surprises in the group stages; Portugal went home early, as did Spain, Italy and England (maybe not a surprise). Overall it has been a good world cup so far with lots of goals.

If we look at the number of goals in the world cup group stages since 1990 we can see that this years world cup leads the way with 136 goals.

If we break it down further we can see that 2006 had the most 1st half goals, followed by 2002, followed closely by this, the 2014 world cup. However, looking at the 2nd half goals this current world cup leads the way with 84, Only in 1998, did the 2nd half goals come close with 81 goals.

If we look at the number of draws and 0-0's since 1990, it tells a different story

As we can see, this years world cup has the joint fewest draws, along with 1990 and 1994 in the group stages. However, 1998, 2002, 2006 and 2010 had lots of draws.
If we look at the number of 0-0's in the group state however, this world cup is one of the worst with 5. The fewest draws were back in 1994 and 1998.

However, overall, you can see why people are rating this one of the best in recent times, with lots of attacking football and lots of goals.

Let's hope it continues into the knock-out stages.

Happy Trading

  1. I was expecting more from Portugal, well there are only 3 strong teams for me: Brazil, Argentina and Germany.
